Visibility no longer equals clicks. If your content isn't structured for an answer, AI will cite it—but name someone else's brand. AEO makes sure the answer features you.
Companies still chase 'rankings' and text volume. But an AI answer doesn't pick the longest article—it picks the clearest: a fact, a definition, a list, a number. Vague marketing copy doesn't make it into the response.
Imagine: a customer asks "which UPS should I choose for a 20 kW office?" Before, they'd browse 5–6 sites. Today Google shows an AI Overview at the top, and half the people read the answer and don't click at all. With ChatGPT or Perplexity, a click is even less likely — the assistant gives a ready answer and names a few brands. The only question is: are you among them?
This is what the zero-click economy. Some site traffic drops off — but a new, more valuable asset appears: mention and citation within the answer itself. And the clicks that remain become warmer: people click through after AI has already recommended you.
What is Zero-Click and why it's not a disaster
Zero-click is search that ends right in the results or in an assistant's chat, without a visit to your site. The sources of such answers today:
The AI block at the top of search results and featured snippets answer immediately, citing multiple sources.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok give an answer and name the source brands.
This isn't the end of SEO — it's a shift in goal. You're not optimizing to get clicks from position 3, but so your brand shows up in the answer itself. For B2B this is often even more profitable: a mention in an AI answer is a free recommendation from a system people trust.
SEO vs AEO: what's the difference
Classic SEO
- Goal: top-10 position and a click
- Optimizes the page for a keyword
- Success = traffic
AEO (Answer Engine)
- The goal is to be the source of the answer and the mention
- Optimizes fact, definition, entity
- Success = citations + warm clicks
Important: AEO doesn't replace SEO, it builds on top of it. Technical foundation, speed and authority (E-E-A-T) still matter — without them neither Google nor LLMs will cite you.
How to get a reply, not just a top-10 ranking
The path of an enquiry in the zero-click era looks like this:
To get to step 3, content must give the system something easy to quote:
- Direct answer in the first paragraph. A question — and a concise answer right away, no 500-word buildup.
- FAQ + Schema.org. FAQPage, HowTo, Article markup — the machine understands the structure and extracts the answer.
- Clear entities (Entity SEO). Explicitly name the brand, product, or concept. Vague "business solutions" don't get cited.
- Quoted facts and figures. Original data, benchmarks, definitions—what AI loves to pull into its answers.
- llms.txt and access for AI crawlers. Give models dense, factual context about your brand (we set this up by default).
"In a zero-click world, the winner isn't the one with more pages, but the one whose fact is easiest to quote. Write so your answer can be inserted into someone else's answer."
